This is one of the longest transfers on our network, crossing the country from the cloud forest to the Caribbean coast. Most Anywhere Costa Rica travelers split it with a night in San José or the Sarapiquí area rather than doing it in one push: ask us about building that into your itinerary.

Stops along the way

One hour of free wait time is included, popular for:

• A stop through the Central Valley for a meal or a break.
• A stretch break in the Caribbean lowlands' banana country.
• A photo stop as you near the coast.

Longer stops can be arranged for an additional fee, priced when you book.

Road notes

The route crosses the Central Valley and drops into the Caribbean lowlands, with a mix of paved highway and slower rural roads. We advise against driving after dark on a route this long, and June–November rain can add delays on the mountain stretches out of Monteverde.

Vehicles

A sedan or SUV covers 1 to 4 travelers with standard luggage; a premium van fits 5 to 8; a Sprinter is available for larger groups or extra bags. Child seats are available on request.
